Parking vouchers introduced by Barnet Council

Half-hour parking vouchers have been introduced to ease difficulties with the new pay-by-phone parking method.

From this week, Barnet Council has introduced the £1 half-hour vouchers, which are available for purchase online through its website.

A one-hour voucher costs £2. One-hour and half-hour vouchers are also available to buy in the borough's 16 libraries, with a minimum order of four.

Since one-hour parking vouchers were introduced in December, 3,628 have been sold online.

The number of motorists now registered to pay for parking by phone in Barnet has risen to 162,437, an increase of 30,000 since pay and display machines were decommissioned in December.

The change has caused uproar among shoppers and traders, who claim the scheme is "killing the high streets".

Parking was among the hottest topics at a Talk London event in Hendon last week, hosted by London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Campaigners attended in matching t-shirts emblazened with slogans opposing pay-by-phone payment methods.

Barnet Traders' Association chairman Gail Laser conceded at the meeting that she believed the payment method was "here to stay", despite her involvement in campaigns to fight it.

She said: "The way it was introduced was very poor and I think the council needs to look at several issues.

"Our high streets are dying on their feet and I do think the council are starting to see that. It has been the death knell for our high streets."

Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said: "While the majority of Barnet motorists are now realising the benefits of cashless parking, we have listened to businesses and introduced the one-hour and now half-hour sessions pre-paid scratch cards."

Traders across the borough have vowed to band together to oppose the council's parking scheme following a forum on the issue in North Finchley in December.

Why was this not mentioned at the Talk London event last week? Maybe they have just invented the idea in a panic?

Oh Good.
Hopefully now all this bleating on and on about the changes in the parking can be put to bed.

For us, vouchers are just a waste of time and tax payers money. Our customers come from New Barnet, Potters Bar, Borehamwood, Enfield etc. Coming to Barnet isn’t about doing your duty and visiting a relative for a weekly cup of tea and planning to get your vouchers online! Shopping can be an impulsive thing and people who shop (as opposed to buying to meet very necessary needs) have emphatically stopped doing so in High Barnet and I assume North Finchley and the rest of the Borough. We must not let Coleman and Cornelius carry on stating that the vouchers are an example of how he has listened to traders and bent over backwards, pulled a rabbit out of his hat, and hey presto, mop up all further dissent with the fantastic voucher scheme. It’s rubbish, it’s pants. Since Nov. 8th, when car park meters were disabled, trade has plummeted.

James Smyth - you still have to have a mobile phone; you still need to have registered your credit / debit card.

What happens with a visitor to the Borough? They pull up at a meter, read the sign and ring up only to get an announcement that they must first register their card (presuming they have a mobile with them) etc. I think the majority will just give up and go to a different Borough. Who will know that vouchers are available at certain shops (which shops?) or libraries? No reference to them on the signage.

Oh well, off to Brent Cross where there is free parking all day and no hassle!

James Smythe is clearly one of the small minority of people in Barnet to think £1 for five minutes parking is good value. What a mug !

its just small change...... but seeing as you dont pay for parking rogerd d because according to your previous posts you walk everywhere, why are you poking your nose in ?
Another point that is directed @ educated or should that be UN educated is that he/she claims that if you have purchased a parking voucher that you still need a mobile phone and debit card ? WHY ?
Also all the local traders are thankful of his/her support by shopping at Brent Cross, where yes the parking is free or so you believe, the cost is hidden by increased prices at the tills

I did not say you need a phone and a card if you are paying by vouchers. However, you have to find the shop that is selling them (there are no notices by the parking bays).

So if I buy a product in say Boots in Brent Cross or M&S and find it in the high street at the same price, the high street shops are making extra profit?

For your information so you can reread what you have written and see clearly that you said you still need a mobile phone and debit card.
It is no secret that large chain stores in shopping centers prop up the loss making ones in the high st. Its all about having a presence and getting the Brand name about, but then I would hardly expect someone as educated as you claim to understand.

I was specifically referring to turning up at a parking bay, without a scratch card. You would need a phone and debit/credit card registered with LBB.

Are you suggesting that the large chain stores pay the loss making shops in the high street? That sounds good, when I open Jim's grocery store opposite Tesco, I expect them to give me a handout !

It must been very clever of you to use a corruption of a name and insults to respond to someone. Very childish.
