Councillor defends parking system ahead of protest march

The Barnet councillor in charge of parking has defended the pay by phone system and fees, ahead of a planned protest on Monday.

Councillor Brian Coleman, cabinet member for the environment, said: "Pay by phone parking allows us to lower back office costs and protect front line services.

"Let's not forget that a year ago we were getting complaints that many of our pay and display machines were broken and people were unable to pay to park.

"More than 162,000 motorists have now signed up to pay by phone parking in Barnet."

Cllr Coleman made the comments in response to next week's planned protest along Finchley High Road, by traders who claim the current parking system is crippling their businesses.

They claim the over the phone payment system, introduced in December, is more time consuming and costly than the old pay and display machines and is putting people off visiting their shops.

Cllr Coleman accepts that people have struggled with the new system, but said there are still cash options available, including scratch cards and PayPoint - a system which allows motorists to buy parking tickets from newsagents.

He said: "Replacing pay and display machines would cost more than £1 million, which is simply not justifiable in this current climate."

He added that the council has set its budget for the year and no changes can therefore be made.

Of course 162,000 people have registered. They have no choice. Coleman blames his own incompetence in mending the machines as the excuse. The people of Barnet can see through this. Even his colleagues in the local Conservative party are now saying the whole thing is a disaster.

Unless they sort this out and dump Coleman, they will pay a heavy price in the Elections in May.

The protest will be at 10am on Monday Morning at North Finchley

Coleman pushed this through without consulting the council or residents properly. He's to blame for this fiasco, which is not unsurprising as he's generally incompetent. If this is a cost saving exercise, by not replacing the existing machines and saving on back office costs, then why are the parking charges higher then before? Let's face it, the council didn't want lost revenue from broken machines and Coleman's a sneaky toad.

The complaints Coleman refers to were a result of the snow last year: it obscured the solar panels which powered them!

I would like to know where the machines went. Many were quite new and had a considerable second hand value. I suspect they are destined to grace the streets of a more enlightened location. The older ones would have had a decent metal scrap value. So who got the money? And how much?

I and many other traders from High Barnet will be there on Monday. And a good few residents too – the value of their properties are being hit by Coleman’s vile assault on our High Streets.

yet another ridiculous statement by Coleman, and an inversion of the truth: £! million to put right an idiotic policy he has forced through in the face of all reason?

The machines are still pretty much in place, and those that have been removed have not yet been scrapped. Put them back in service, and surcharge the Tory councillors who agreed the policy in the first place for any additional cost.
