A Colindale mother-of-three is sacrificing sleep to pursue her dream of forging a career in music.

Zanuela Quarcoo, 33, of Five Acre, released her first single, Electric, on her website last week and hopes to soon have live concerts and tours. She is releasing an album in March.

Ms Quarcoo said: “I have been singing since childhood, I sing all the time. It just comes naturally to me. I write and I sing.

“I have always been a musical person, I have sung in churches and I sang at school.”

Ms Quarcoo has three children under the age of 10 and is also HIV activist, journalist and entrepreneur with her own skin care range.

She said: “I have always been involved in media and entertainment – I used to be a broadcast journalist in Ghana – but I haven’t had a chance to explore music before.”

However, following her dream career is coming at a price as the only time Ms Quarcoo can work on her music is at night.

She said: “I hardly sleep; I never get more than six hours sleep a night.

“I believe the time for sleep will come. When you have as much on your plate as I do you can’t sleep much.”

Ms Quarcoo, who is originally from Ghana and has been in the UK for 11 years, is a soul and blues singer.

She said: “I am hoping to reach as many people as I can. I hope people will relate to the music and that it will encourage them to buy the album.

“I want the album to show who I am as an artist.”

Hang on, releasing singles and an album without playing any shows? What is this? Is this even a story? There are probably hundreds of people in Barnet who have put songs of their own online. Why not extend this story to name them all.

A lot of people loose sleep to pursue their dreams whether it is vocational education, distance learning degrees or singing. Surely the Barnet Times reporters have something more interesting to report on for the the residents of Barnet!

Lots of people are going without sleep because they have to work longer shifts,do extra jobs in order just to simply survive let alone pursue a dream.
I hope pursuit of this dream is self funded........
