Barnet FC’s decision to play one last season at its Underhill stadium has been welcomed by the borough council.

The Bees announced yesterday that they will wait until the end of the 2012/2013 season before leaving their current ground.

Club chairman Tony Kleanthous will apply to extend an existing lease of Barnet Cricket Club land, due to expire in December, which provides fans with access to the south of the ground.

This afternoon the authority announced it would be happy to discuss the extension with the club.

Leader of Barnet Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said: "I'm delighted if this is the case. We've always said we're happy to discuss a longer lease with Barnet FC if they wish to stay in the borough. I look forward to meeting with Mr Kleanthous to discuss this."
