Design students from Middlesex University have collaborated with award winning musician Imogen Heap on an exciting musical project.

Heap's latest project involves an egg-shaped interactive Listening Chair, which is being used to gather opinions from her fans on what she calls: “The song that still needs to be written.”

Heap hopes to gain ideas for a type of song that her fans would most like to hear, but does not yet exist.

Fans who sit in the chair come face to face with a visor containing a tablet computer, camera, microphone, and speakers.

A video of Heap is shown on an LED screen which guides users through the experience.

Fans can decide whether they would like their contribution to be used in the song's accompanying video, or simply be a personal message to the musician.

The Listening Chair was created by Design students Rebecca Board, Sid Odedra and graduate Iliyan Kukushliev, under the guidance of top designer and engineer Moritz Waldemeyer.

The chair was unveiled at the Sound Summit in Sydney on Friday, May 25.

It was then featured at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Saturday, June 16, Sunday, June 17 and Friday, June 22, where the student designers were able to see their work in action.

Heap said: "I've really enjoyed working on The Listening Chair with the students at Middlesex University. I loved getting to know them, especially during our final push. It was really crunch time but spirits remained high."

Middlesex PhD student Sid Odedra, from Barnet, said: "I'm pleased the chair is getting a good reception and that fans are enjoying the experience.

“Imogen really loves the chair and has been so complimentary about it. She was so thrilled with the Middlesex team that she has even invited us over to hers for dinner!"

The Grammy and Ivor Novello Award winning musician is known for her innovative work that blurs boundaries between music and technology.

Her music has been featured in various films and television shows, from The Chronicles of Narnia to The O.C.
