Man jailed after attacking long-term partner with wine bottle

A man from New Southgate has been jailed for four years after attacking his long-term partner with a broken wine bottle.

Jaydave Desai, 36, started arguing with the 34-year-old victim at his home in Coppies Grove in the early hour of December 28 last year.

As the argument became heated Desai grabbed a wine bottle and broke it. Holding the victim down on a sofa, he pushed the smashed bottle repeatedly into her face.

A female friend who was there at the time attempted to intervene but Desai threatened her with the broken bottle.

The victim was bleeding profusely from lacerations to her face and arms and fearing more violence, she fled the property with her friend.

She was taken to Barnet Hospital where her wounds were treated.

Officers found Desai at home in bed. He resisted arrest and spat, shouted and swore when handcuffed.

He later admitted being under the influence of drink and drugs and expressed regret over the incident.

The victim told police she had no memory of the assault.

Officer in Charge DC Lisa Ryan said: “This was a vicious attack and a serious assault on a vulnerable woman.

“Although the victim herself has not felt able to give evidence against her attacker, police were still able to gather enough evidence to make a successful prosecution.

“Anyone who thinks they may be able to carry out domestic violence attacks with impunity should take note – the police will do all they can to support domestic violence victims and bring that same dedication to prosecuting offenders.”

Desai was found guilty of Wounding with Intent at Wood Green Crown Court on Wednesday, June 20 and was sentenced to four years in prison.

the victim was probably too frightened to give evidence so told police that she could not remember the attack as he will be back out on the streets in no time

he will serve just 2 years while she will carry the scars both physically & mentally for the rest of her life. The judge should have taken this into account when sentencing
