Pupils take part in Olympics themed sports day

Pupils enjoyed an Olympics themed sports day as part of their school’s centenary celebrations yesterday.

Belmont School in The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, decided to have a themed sports day in honour of the Games as well as their 100th anniversary.

The day began with an opening ceremony as the children too part in a parade, holding flags from countries around the world.

Instead of school houses, pupils were divided into continents and worked together to gain points for their team.

Parents and staff watched as the 412 pupils took part in numerous events including 100 and 200 metre sprints, shot-put, javelin and high jump.

Medals and trophies were handed out by Mike Corby, a former Hockey and Squash Olympian, and Kaz Donald, chair of the Friends of Belmont School.

Lynn Duncan, headteacher said: “It was lovely to see the children being so supportive of everybody. They enjoyed the sport and the competition but at the end of the day they really supported one another.

“Europe was the winning team. Let’s hope that happens in the Olympics.”
