Thames Water says it is working with Barnet Council to fix a problem drain that regularly overflows and sends badly smelling water down a busy Hendon high street.

A brief torrential downpour on Tuesday sent a cascade of water gushing down Church Road as the bubbling drain in nearby Johns Avenue overflowed.

Thames Water initially said the gulley was the responsibility of Barnet Council but has since agreed to send workmen out to investigate the problem.

A statement released by the company said: "We are working with Barnet Council to try and get this issue resolved as soon as possible. We believe there may be a blockage in the sewer which is causing the drains to overflow. A team of engineers will be out Monday to investigate further."

Shopkeepers complained on Tuesday that the sporadic deluge of water and the bad smell are putting customers off visiting their businesses.
