Plans for a housing redevelopment the size of seven football pitches in Whetstone will be put on show next week.

Housing developer Annington plans to demolish dozens of former Ministry of Defence properties in Sweets Way and build new homes.

A public consultation into proposals for the seven hectare site will take place at St John’s Hall, in Friern Barnet Lane, on Wednesday and Thursday.

The developer is yet to submit plans to Barnet Council but says feedback across the two days will be used to shape any future planning application.

MoD personnel moved out of the buildings in 2009/10 but some of the properties are being rented by private tenants.

Annington was unable to provide details of the proposed development before next week’s consultation.

The exhibition will take place on Wednesday, September 12, from 3pm to 7.30pm and Thursday, September 13, between 3pm and 8pm.

Plans are for 600 extra homes/flats to replace the current 200 that are there with no extra access - current entrances of Sweets Way and Oakleigh Road North will be the only access. No plans for green space or indeed an extra school to facilitate the resultant influx of families to the area.

Increased traffic and bottlenecks on junctions with the High Road N20 (at least 600 extra cars in that small area if we assume every household has at least one car)

Sounds great..... Not.

The development needs to be far smaller in proposed size for this area - Whetstone is not the Grahame Park Estate (But soon will be if Barnet Council approve this proposal).
