Plans for 400 new homes in Whetstone put on show by developer Annington

Plans to build 400 new homes on a site the size of seven football pitches in Whetstone went on show at a public exhibition this week.

Annington, which owns 150 former Ministry of Defence houses in Sweets Way, wants to demolish the existing buildings to make way for its own development.

Up to 400 new homes, comprising three and four bedroom houses, two bedroom houses and one and two bedroom flats, will be built if planning permission is granted by Barnet Council.

No application has yet been submitted by the developer but a public consultation was held at St John’s Hall, in Friern Barnet Lane, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Annington representative Daniel Griffiths said the company had not set a deadline for submitting the proposals but it is hoping work could begin by 2014.

Among the plans is a new access point from Oakleigh Road South to the residential site, though there will be no cut-through to the other side of the development.

A nursery and children’s play areas have also been incorporated in the current plans, with the vast majority of existing trees being retained.

Two blocks of flats at five-and-a-half stories tall are the biggest buildings on the current drawings, with the majority of properties listed at three-and-a-half floors high.

Hundreds of people visited the consultation over the two days and left their comments, which the developer says will help shape the final plans.

Mr Griffiths said: “We have been in consultation with the council and its members for some time. This stage is about hearing what people have to say so we can take that on board and move on to the next stage.”
