Plans announced for future of Metropolitan Police training site in Colindale

The Metropolitan Police have today announced their vision for the future of the Peel Centre site in Colindale.

The police, and The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, will now begin a public consultation on the planned regeneration of the 73 acre Aerodrome Road site.

The plans include the building of a new facility for training and operational policing, as well as opening up the rest of the site for the building of houses, shops, a primary school and open space.

It is thought that these changes would halve the running costs for the Metropolitan Police meaning they could invest more money into operational policing.

The site was first developed in the 1930s and has been the venue of police training for nearly 80 years.

However, in that time the needs of the police have changed dramatically meaning that he site no longer suits their purpose.

As a result they have drafted in a team of planners to draw up new proposals for the site.

These plans will be on display at the Royal Air Force Museum in Colindale from 12pm until 8pm on October 4, from 10am until 5pm on October 5 and from 12pm until 5pm on October 6.

Once this public consultation is over the police will submit a planning application to Barnet Council.

I understand that the Met's committment to an Olympic Legacy for the rest of the 21st Century is to concrete over the playing fields and running track.

Perhaps the 'Times' would care to ask the Mayor's office, Lord Coe, and the offices of those members of the Royal Family who have commented about the subject of a Legacy, what they think about this grubby action by the Met.

The irony is when this 'recession' is over they will need the vast size of the current training school to deal with the large number of recruits.

Cost of everything and value of nothing comes to mind!!

Adequate training facilities are nice to have but never forget the important thing is what goes on within them. What should we expect of our police and how should they be evaluated? For insight and direction on this and other important police improvement issues, take a look at “Arrested Development: A Veteran Police Chief Sounds Off About Protest, Racism, Corruption and the Seven Steps Necessary to Improve Our Nation’s Police” (Amazon.com in US and EU). And the blog at http://improvingpoli
ce.wordpress.com/ where other current police improvement issues are discussed. Good luck and may we all experience not just good but great policing! Great policing is accomplished by police who are well-trained and led, restrained in their use of force, honest, and courteous to every person
