Legendary North Finchley and Barnet street figure 'Horace' has died

A “legendary” street figure who was “part of the furniture” in Finchley for more than three decades has passed away.

Horace White, who lived on the Grange Estate in East Finchley, collapsed outside the Whittington Hospital yesterday (Monday) on his way to an appointment.

Doctors fought to save him for more than two hours but the eccentric character was pronounced dead overnight.

The hugely popular man, believed to be 54, was well known around the North Finchley area, where he would hang around outside shops and chat to passers-by for several hours a day.

He was best known for wishing people the “best of luck” and travelling on the 263 bus around the area.

Flowers have been placed outside MacDonald’s restaurant on the High Road, while social media sites have been flooded with tributes.

A card left outside MacDonald’s reads: “RIP Horace. Our Finchley legend. Sadly missed, but you made us smile! Love Kirstie xx.”

People were visibly shocked as they passed the impromptu memorial in High Road this afternoon and discovered the news, with many repeating Horace’s famous catchphrase.

A Facebook group entitled ‘Horace of Finchley’, set up overnight, has attracted more than 3,600 ‘Likes’ and people have taken to Twitter to share their fond memories.

An online petition for Barnet Council to lay a bench in Horace’s memory has also gathered strong support.

Tributes have been paid to the “local hero” who was “known by everyone for his eccentric and loveable personality”.

Sharon Hayday, of Summers Lane, saw Horace on the High Road for more than 20 years.

The 51-year-old said: “He was always out with his suitcase and bags. He was so friendly, all the shop owners knew him. He was lovely, smiley, happy. I’m really shocked – it is so sad.”

Rumours of Horace’s death were spread around the area last year but funeral directors AW Luck and Sons, in Church Lane, confirmed he passed away yesterday.

Funeral details are expected to be announced in the next couple of days, with one passer-by predicting it to be “the biggest send off Finchley has ever seen”.

Michael Scott, 34, has known Horace since he was ten years old, growing up in the area.

He said: “He used to play games with people on the pavement – naming songs from every decade. I used to say to him: ‘How do you know all these songs?’.

“He knew everyone and insisted that he knew your surname. If you only gave him your first name he didn’t want to know. He was a cool guy.

“Some school kids would wind him up and call him Stanley – he hated that name. All the bus drivers used to let him on for free. He’s like the pavement on the ground around this place. I can’t believe it.”

I lived in North Finchley for 10 years, since i was born. Horace used to always draw me pictures with his crayons when he saw me and always waved to my grandmother and I. We always saw him outside Sainsbury's and he seemed so happy it was so warming. Everyone in my family that knew him misses him deeply, he was a great man.

I have known Horace since 1989. He came to my shop every day for a portion of chips. He was always friendly with a smile on his face. I knew him before he pushed around his trolly, when he used to carry bags. Unfortunately he used to get a hard time from kids calling him standby but even when he got angry he was still a fantastic guy. Everyone at tally go fish restaurant will miss him a lot. Best of luck to you Horace.

I lived in the same block as horrace Bouchier House, on the grange from the age of 11 to about 15. I am so shocked hearing of him passing away! He was a lovely soul, would not hurt a fly! He would always call us by our surnames! And remembered hundreds! You could talk to him for ages! God rest his soul. And he will always be remembered for his famous phrase "The Best Of Luck" RIP Horrace! Finchley will not be the same without your unique presence!

I lived in North Finchley for 30 years and Horace was very frequently outside Sainsbury's or Owen & Owen's (before it was closed down), everytime he saw me he would shout out my name and give me a big hug and say "you're lovely" and give me a kiss on the cheek and say his famous saying "the best of luck!", I'm really going to miss him :-( xx

I have known Horace for most of the 30 years he has been around, and I have had the pleasure to buy him many meals in that time. He was a great character, a big man with a big voice and big heart, but also a big temper when needed. RIP Horace /Stanley,we will all miss you.

Horace used to ask me for a kiss, when he saw me, it always made me smile. The compliment made me feel better. He will be missed as a character we saw all the time in our area.

SO SAD i had known Horace since 1976 a big part of my life growing up, i have to say the most gentle giant i ever met. In the early years we would say stanley give us the works or a demo, he would then shout and swear abuse at us but it was in good humour and even when you made him angry you could always talk him round he would not harm a fly. He was the (greenmile John Coffi the Vangogh of Finchley, he was the man with a kind boy locked with in waiting for us at heavens gates now standing just waiting to greet all with a grin RIP Horace your the man (Best of luck!) from Les Davis and family
