Barnet Councillor Brian Coleman called for talks with Conservative group leader

Tory Brian Coleman has been summoned for talks with the Conservative party leader after refusing to apologise for a Nazi ‘blackshirt’ slur.

Group leader Richard Cornelius is reported to be furious with the Totteridge representative’s defiant stance and has called for a meeting with the former Barnet Mayor tomorrow morning (Thursday).

Former GLA member Cllr Coleman has ignored orders by an independent standards panel and a first-tier tribunal judge to apologise for offensive emails sent to two members of the public.

The 51-year-old stated he is “under no obligation to do so” but Tory group leader Councillor Cornelius told the Times Series today he was taking legal advice on the matter.

Former cabinet member Cllr Coleman called Jewish father-of-three Ron Cohen a “disloyal Israeli” and told another constituent Doctor Charlotte Jago that “70 years ago you would have been a (Nazi) blackshirt” in email outbursts earlier this year.

In March, Barnet Council’s standards panel found the politician, once a senior aide to London Mayor Boris Johnson, had broken the members’ code of conduct with the remarks.

Despite the decision being backed by a first-tier tribunal on appeal in August, former GLA member Councillor Coleman is refusing to retract the comments.

In an email reply to the London Evening Standard when asked if he was going to apologise, the former cabinet member said: “I am under no obligation to do so. This was a matter dealt with by the flawed Local Government Standards regime, now abolished.”

Councillor Coleman has previously found himself in hot water for allegedly misusing his members’ parking permit and appearing to swear at a member of the public during a council meeting.

Barnet Council is also understood to be exploring possible avenues of punishment for the politician for the latest controversy.

Councillor Cornelius said he would be speaking with Councillor Coleman about the issue tomorrow morning.

When asked if he was disappointed or surprised by the senior politician’s attitude, Cllr Cornelius said: “I certainly look forward to hearing his views. He has not said to me what he will or will not do as of yet.

“I can’t make any comment on my own views of the situation. We’re all part of a larger party and there is a way of dealing with matters that will be followed.”

I won't be holding my breath waiting for Cllr Cornelius to take any action.

For God's sake, Cornelius: show some courage and integrity and disassociate yourself and your party from this mess. Why on earth is it taking so long to do and say the right thing?

On the plus side, the longer Coleman is around to embarrass the Tories (if that is possible in Barnet) the better for Labour, so - yes, maybe just carry on sitting back & do nothing ...

Cornelius won't do a thing.

The Tories are so screwed up that Coleman will get the Boris job when Boris gets Cameron's. Mitchell will run the new Public Standards Board.

Actually it won't quite get there - 2014 will see a Labour landslide, if not tsunami.

Why waste time trying to force Brian Coleman to apologise when he patently isn’t sorry. Indeed, the opposite is true; the only satisfaction he gets in life is shooting off his mouth trying to wind people up. Empty vessels make the most sound.

Cllr Spineless Cornelius should not waste time “talking” to Mr Coleman. Just remove the party whip and sack him from his committee chairmanship. End of story.

No hang on, let's give the doddery old duffer one last chance to do the right thing, and sling Coleman from the council.

We’ve known for some time Cornelius isn’t the sharpest knife in Barnet’s drawer. We shouldn’t dismiss him just because he’s been a bit slow in grasping things in the past. Who knows, maybe he’s been told the truth about last week’s events....

Possibly someone has explained things on the back of an envelope, like how the domino effect will wipe out the entire Tory group at the next local election if that obnoxious prat Coleman isn’t removed from the party and a by-election called.

But let’s non forget, Cornelius demoted Coleman, but still gave him a position in the council; and Cornelius is seen laughing along with Coleman at his sad, mad and old hags comment. So maybe Cornelius has had a Damascus moment, and realises how embarrassing his recent daft comments and weak actions have been seen by the rest of us and the national Conservative Party.

I have to admit, when I last spoke to him, it was rather like talking to a simpleton; but surely there is some sense in that vacuous brain of his…..

(So Called) Leader Cornelius has already stated that Coleman is innocent until proven guilty. Well Coleman has already been found guilty on this one so let's see what the Leaden Leader does.

But like GRG I'm not holding my breath either. Thanks to The Barnet Bugle we have all seen the Loss Leader clapping and applauding Coleman's sexist/ageist abuse of residents so we must conclude that he fully supports Coleman and all his works.

2:30pm and still no news from the outcome of the usually decisive glorious leader's chat with Coleman.

Enjoyed the flightpast by Bekshires, Hampshires and Saddlebacks over Barnet though.

OK it's now past 7:00pm so I guess Cornelius isn't going to do anything about this. I suppose I will have to continue putting up with the growing ranks of former Tory voters droning on about 'I can't believe I voted for this lot' .

Tory councillors please note; 'this lot' - you're all now tarnished by this ludicrous behaviour. Is that what you really want?

Roll on May 2014 when we get our say.

Coleman is clearly not fit to be a public representative and I think neither is Cornelius. I certainly didn't vote for any of them, but shame on those who did. This is what happens when people vote for ideology rather than holding individual candidates and their actions up to scrutiny.

It must be a Tory party trait that everyone else is a Pleb and therefore not worthy of civil treatment.
