Mental health patients stage protest in Edgware
12:19pm Friday 28th September 2012 in News
By Emma Innes
Mental health patients, and former mental health patients, are to hold a demonstration in Edgware tomorrow.
Members of the charity Speak Out Against Psychiatry will be outside the Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Station Road from 11.30am.
They will be handing out leaflets which they hope will give people an insight into their experience of mental health care in London.
The protest aims to educate people about the treatment of mental health patients with the intention of encouraging more humane treatment methods.
Cheryl Prax from Speak Out Against Psychiatry, said: “This protest is important because most people don’t realise what happens in the mental health units of hospitals.
“People are being damaged by the drugs they are given.”
Speak Out Against Psychiatry is a nationwide organisation trying to address what it describes as the “abuse” of mental health patients by some NHS trusts.
