Smash and grab at supermarket in Whetstone

Three suspects are in custody following a smash and grab burglary at a supermarket in Whetstone in the early hours of this morning.

One suspect jumped out of a black Ford Ka outside Waitrose in High Road at approximately 2am, before using a bin to smash open the doors.

Once inside, they grabbed bottles of whiskey, worth around £1,000, and stashed them in the vehicle.

Police used CCTV to locate the vehicle ten minutes later in Bell View Road but the suspects failed to stop.

The car hit speeds of 80mph in a 40mph zone in Barnet and Potters Bar, and careered onto the wrong side of the road on the A12.

Following a one and a half hour pursuit involving a police helicopter, officers used a stinger to puncture all four tyres bringing finally bringing the vehicle to a halt in Essex.

Two men, aged 32 and 23, and a 22-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving. They remain in custody at Basildon police station.
