Edgware man pleads guilty to animal cruelty charges

An Edgware man facing 27 counts of animal cruelty has pleaded guilty to four of the charges.

Nijamul Islam, of Farm Road, appeared at Luton Magistrates’ Court on Monday accused of causing unnecessary suffering to 17 dogs and failing to properly look after a further 156.

The charges include confining animals in a cramped and dirty environment contaminated with urine and faeces, failure to provide veterinary care and failure to provide adequate nutrition.

The 39-year-old this week pleaded guilty to failing to provide adequate nutrition to a German shepherd dog, failing to provide veterinary care for an American bulldog and a puppy, and confining 173 dogs and puppies in cramped and dirty conditions.

The RSPCA, which brought the prosecution, has dropped one further charge, leaving Mr Islam still facing 22 counts of animal cruelty.

The two-week trial continues.
