He was taken to hospital where, as of midnight on Sunday, he remained in a critical but stable condition.
Four fire engines and about 20 firefighters from Hornsey and Finchley were called to tackle the blaze. which caused substantial damage to the ground floor of the property.
Crews took about an hour to get the fire under control.
No-one else was injured and police said the man lived alone.
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We sent one ambulance crew, an officer, a single responder in a car, and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team. Our staff treated one patient, reported to be a 65-year-old man, for smoke inhalation and burns. He was taken as a priority to Whipps Cross Hospital.”
Fire investigators worked at the property all day yesterday but concluded the blaze was not started deliberately.
A cause is yet to be established.
