Firefighters were called back to a burnt out building containing asbestos when it reignited this afternoon.

Crews spent more than two hours tackling the initial blaze in two derelict NHS buildings off Barnet Road, High Barnet, at 6.30pm yesterday.

Investigators began work to establish a cause this morning when one of the smouldering buildings caught fire again at about 1.30pm.

Crews were called back to the scene and police officers closed off Barnet Road in both directions at the junction with Elmbank Avenue, to allow fire hoses to be placed across the carriageway.

Flames in the roof of the former hospital building were put out by 2pm and the road has since reopened.

No cause for the initial blaze has yet been established, but police are not ruling out an arson attack.
