The leader of the Barnet Labour Group has called on the Tory party to remove the whip from Brian Coleman.

Councillor Coleman was, this morning, charged with assault by beating and driving on a road without reasonable consideration.

Since this news broke Councillor Alison Moore has said that the leader of the council, Richard Cornelius, should remove the whip from him.

She said: “Now that Cllr Coleman has been charged with assault it is clearly time for the leader of the council to take action and remove the whip from him.

“I have written to the leader today asking him to confirm that he will be doing this.”

In a statement Barnet Borough Council said: “The council is aware that Councillor Brian Coleman has been charged with criminal offences and is due to appear before Hendon Magistrates court on 5 November 2012.

“The matter is therefore subject to judicial process and it would not be appropriate for the council to make any further comment that could be prejudicial to that process.

“Councillor Coleman continues as a ward councillor, his committee membership and chairmanship is a matter for full Council.”
