Richard Cornelius, leader of Barnet Borough Council, says Brian Coleman must 'take a back seat' in politics

The leader of Barnet Council has said that Brian Coleman will “have to take a back seat” in Barnet politics until his legal issues are resolved.

Councillor Richard Cornelius said: “Councillor Coleman has been told that he will have to take a back seat as regards Barnet politics until legal matters are resolved.

“I have no wish to prejudice any trial and he remains innocent until proven guilty.”

Cllr Cornelius’s comments come after Cllr Coleman, ward councillor for Totteridge, was charged with assault by beating and driving on a road without reasonable consideration.

The charges relate to an incident in High Road, North Finchley, on September 20.

Cllr Coleman, a former member of the GLA, has been bailed to return to Hendon Magistrates’ Court on November 5.

Brian Coleman should be suspended from his council positions until such time as he is acquited of the charges against him. That would not prejudice his trial. Richard Cornelius is simply too weak and ineffectual to show the leadership that is required if the Conservatives wish to remain in office.

He also should be suspended for now from his position on the North London Waste Authority (which I believe carries an allowance, paid by LB of Barnet).

Any normal right thinking person would have had the decency to resign, but then again any normal right thinking person would not have behaved like this in the first place! Coleman should have been sacked long before he attacked this women. He is a disgrace to public office and the Conservative party as well as a danger to the public.

He has been attacking the people of Barnet ever since he came to power. The word power sums him up. Power before people. He sees us all as silent and stupid sheep, bleating to the same tune. Sadly many are like that which hands their power straight to glory boys like Coleman and the others.
