As Barnet Football Club fans waved an emotional goodbye to 106 years at Underhill, a group of stalwart supporters are already plotting to bring the club “back where it belongs”.

Undeterred by the doom and gloom of relegation from the Football League and leaving Underhill – the club’s home since 1907 – Barnet FC Supporters' Trust are still smiling.

Hoping one day to welcome the Bees back to the borough the trust has launched a Back 2 Barnet Campaign with the hope of raising £75,000 to submit their very own planning application for a brand new stadium in Barnet.

Trust director Derek Rocholl told the Times Series: “Barnet is the club’s historic home and while we know it has to progress, and moving to the Hive is a part of that, the best place for it is in Barnet.

“The club’s fans are in Barnet, its history is here and so we want to bring the club back where it belongs.

"The club is a community asset and it belongs in Barnet.”

The first team will play their matches for the 2013/14 season at The Hive stadium in the neighbouring borough of Harrow – although the club has only been given an initial ten-year lease to play league matches there.

The 44-acre site has both artificial and natural grass football pitches, a bar and gym as well as conference rooms. But the trust believes similar facilities are needed in Barnet, and could be within their grasp with a little help from the community.

In particular, the group is considering developing a stadium where Underhill currently stands, as well as using land further south of the current stadium.

With the fundamental backing of the club, which has pledged its support, trust members hope their plans could be ready to submit by early next year.

A spokesman for Barnet FC said: "This campaign has the football club's full backing. We share our supporters’ desire to get back to Barnet as quickly as possible.”

The trust plans to raise money through community events as well as selling Back 2 Barnet T-shirts, of which it has already sold £1,700-worth in just one week.

Mr Rocholl said: “We want people to enjoy supporting their club and the campaign. Yes, we’ve been relegated but we want to enjoy the Conference and our experience at the Hive while planning our return to Barnet. We want people to have fun.

"We've been speaking to the club about the plans. Once we've raised the money for them, and if they go through then the club would pay for the stadium - although it's not known how much that would cost yet.”

Many Bees supporters have blamed Barnet Borough Council for their move to Harrow following a long dispute between the authority and the club’s chairman Tony Kleanthous.

But leader of the council, Councillor Richard Cornelius has said he would happily welcome the club back to the borough.

He said: “The council has always been willing to talk about a suitable home for Barnet FC in the borough and we are happy to continue to do so.

“I would therefore be delighted to meet with members of the supporters’ trust to discuss their plans.”
