People living near a football club’s new home ground are angry at Harrow Borough Council's "irresponsible" handling of the club's tenancy.

Last week the Harrow Times reported on the details of the lease agreed by Harrow Council and Barnet Football Club using The Hive for the club’s home games next season.

The council had agreed an application last year to amend the original lease for the Camrose Avenue stadium to allow professional football to be played on the site, but this was not acted on as the club was relegated.

Andrew Brandon, of Aldridge Avenue, has handed a petition with more than 600 signatures against an alcohol licence application from the club to Harrow Council .

He said: “We are furious with the council and the inadequacy of their consultation process.

“If that amendment had been made by the council then there would have been palpable rage from the residents living near the Hive.

“If there had been a consultation it would have been strongly rejected by the community neighbouring the site.

“We have talked to nearly all the people who live in streets directly next to the Hive and no one was consulted about the possible change in amendment.

“We feel the council has been irresponsible with its consultation and the handling of the whole issue from the beginning.

“We do not have the infrastructure around the site to cope with club of that size.”

It was revealed last week the plans were never actually followed through and currently no Football League fixtures are permitted at the ground.

The club was relegated from the Football League into the Conference in April this year. Under the current lease the club's first team can play at The Hive for next season.

The Harrow Times has asked Harrow Borough Council about the the lease and the amendment agreed last year and is awaiting a reply.
