BUDDING film-makers can follow in the footsteps of a Barnet pioneer by taking part in an exciting short film competition.

Film Barnet in 90 seconds, run in partnership with the London Borough of Barnet, Film London and the Times Series, is giving wannabe directors the chance to win some great prizes, as well as having their film screened before a public audience.

Entrants can take inspiration from Victorian inventor and Friern Barnet resident Robert Paul, who is credited with being the inventor of the British film industry. He created a number of cinema techniques and constructed the first purpose-built studio in Britain during Victorian times.

Paul Homer, chief executive of the Phoenix Cinema and one of Film Barnet’s judges, said: “Robert Paul was the pioneer of the film industry and it is exciting that through this competition other Barnet residents will get their chance to add to the borough’s rich history in film making.

"I look forward to seeing their films on any subject, which can be made using anything from the most lo-tech, to the most hi-tech equipment.”

Film Barnet is part of Film London in 90 Seconds, launched last summer as part of the London Borough Film Fund Challenge.

The competition is open to Barnet residents aged 11 to 24, and 25 and over, as well as anyone studying in Barnet. The entries will be judged by council and Film London representatives, as well as Rachel Sharp, Times Series Editor, and Paul Holmer, chief executive of the Phoenix Cinema.
