A toilet will now be installed in Golders Green library as part of a £90,000 renovation project, overturning fears that visitors could be caught short.

The library will undergo a revamp in the summer to install self-service machines for books, wireless computer technology and improve the layout, but it was initially claimed that it would remain toilet-less.

For years, book-borrowers have been forced to use toilets in neighbouring restaurants and Golders Green tube station, but that will now change after council officers decided a toilet was needed after all.

Councillor John Marshall, cabinet member for investment in learning, said: "£90,000 is being invested in Golders Green Library to vastly improve facilities for customers "As promised, we investigated whether the installation of a toilet was feasible, and now I am pleased to say it is."

The rennovation is part of Barnet Council's Leading Libraries project, which will see £1 million invested in modernising six of the borough's libraries and enabling residents to access council services through them.

Liberal Democrat councillor Susette Palmer has been vocal in demanding that a toilet is installed in the library.

She said: "I'm extremely glad that I was able to convince the cabinet member concerned and I know that residents will be too."
