The Barnet Civic Awards, now in their 16th year, are an opportunity for the borough to officially recognise the commitment and hard work of those who strive to make a positive difference to the lives of others.

Winners and nominations were announced and recognised at the above ceremony that took place on the evening of Tuesday 12th April 2016 at The Hendon Town Hall.

Volunteers of the CommUNITY Barnet Volunteer Centre were presented with a certificate for their hard work and felt extremely proud of their achievements.

Since January 2015, the Volunteer Centre Barnet has been run entirely by volunteers to provide brokerage service for seeking volunteering.

John Gribbon, employee of Healthwatch Barnet, former volunteer of CommUNITY Barnet and Nutmeg, Barnet Youth Volunteer Advisor and Timebank Officer, who joined the team in 2011, made the decision for the Volunteer Centre to be run as volunteers, offering a volunteering service delivered by volunteers. This decision was made following the loss of funding from the Volunteer Centre, with the possibility of having to close the centre down. Three other great volunteers were recruited and all dedicated one day a week to continue to run this service. They strive to provide essential support and information to Barnet residents, helping them into a variety of exciting volunteering opportunities.

Melvin Gamp, volunteer of Healthwatch Barnet, also won an award for his commitment and dedication in his role.

CommUNITY Barnet and Healthwatch Barnet are looking forward to celebrating Volunteer Week 1st - 12th June. Have you thought of a way you would like to celebrate your volunteers? Tweet us @CommUNITYBarnet
