The one thing young Londoners wanted to hear from the chancellor was that he would do something to make finding a home here a little less hard.
If we buy, we have to compete with people who have capital and want to buy to let, which pushes the price up. We want homes to live in, not to use as ATM machines.
If we rent, we have no security – all the legal protection for tenants has been taken away.
Average house prices in Barnet last year were £483,500 – which is 15 times average earnings for Barnet residents (£33,900). You would need to earn £110,500 a year to qualify for an 80 per cent mortgage on a £483,500 house, according to the National Housing Federation.
All Mr Osborne’s so-called help-to-buy ISA will do is help drive prices even higher.
It’s clear that under the Conservatives, life for young Londoners without substantial capital will get worse. We desperately need a change of government.
