  • Crime figures released showed hate crimes were reported in Barnet at a rate of five a day in 2007.
  • The family of a woman killed in the 7/7 bombings in central London set up a children’s eye care centre in her honour, on the third anniversary of her death. Miriam Hyman, 32, from Holyoake Walk, Hampstead Garden Suburb, died in the Tavistock Square explosion.
  • Many public services ground to a halt as hundreds of Barnet Council workers and teachers went on strike. A total of 723 teachers, librarians and social workers joined one of the biggest nationwide strikes over wages.
  • The ill-gotten gains of a drug dealer became the prized possessions of an East Barnet youth centre. Barnet police donated a plasma television and a games console to Church Farm Youth Club after their previous owner was convicted of drug dealing.
