• Police searched for an alleged kidnap victim who had fled their suspected captors after a car crash in Hendon. An unmarked police car was in collision with two other vehicles at the junction of Golders Green Road and Brent Street during an undercover operation to free the victim.

  • Figures released showed Barnet had more unpaid council tax than any other London borough. Almost £7 million of the tax went uncollected in 2007.

  • Oliver Kingonzila, 19, who captained Barnet FC’s under-18s team, was fatally knifed outside E Bar in Croydon. Police believed the stabbing occurred during a fracas involving three men. Barnet FC manager, Paul Fairclough said the tragedy had devastated staff at the club and described his charge as a ‘gentle giant’.

  • Barnet rower Tom Aggar completed an incredible journey to etch his name into the Paralympic history books in Beijing. The 24-year-old had taken up the sport 18 months previously following a fall that broke his back and paralysed his legs.
