Neighbours are at their wits' end with yobs who are “wreaking havoc” on their road by using it as a public toilet and destroying their garden fences.

People living in Greenway Close, Colindale, are demanding action be taken against the vandals, who they say are users of nearby Cavendish Suite, in Edgware Road.

Having regularly been verbally abused in the area, they claim they are often afraid to leave their houses when an event is going on at the banqueting hall.

Preston Morris, 69, said: “I once had a man chanting all sorts of expletive words at me – it’s absolutely disgusting.

“They are wreaking havoc on what used to be a quiet street. It’s a completely mental situation and it has got to stop.

“We’re fed up of living this way. We’re fed up with having to replace our garden fences when they’ve been kicked in again. We just want action.”

On numerous occasions, people living in the close say they have had to contact the police and Barnet Borough Council’s public health team as music blaring from the banqueting suite became too loud to bear.

Despite regularly contacting the authority about the issue, they say no action has been taken and there is often no record of their phone calls the following day.

Janet Burstone said: “It’s making us very stressed out as we wake up in the mornings and worry about what we’ll see.

“Sometimes it looks as though 50 rubbish bags have been tipped over onto the street. It’s a complete mess.

“It’s also incredibly noisy. Last Friday, they were playing music well into the night and it literally makes out house shake, we can get no peace around here.”

The neighbours also say their road has also become a public car park for those visiting the banqueting hall as cars regularly block their driveways and bus stops.

Its website specifically advertises Greenway Close as a place for visitors to park – a fact that has enraged the householders.

More than 30 people signed a petition demanding the authority to take action in January –but so far, nothing has been done.

Sue Hannington, who lives in nearby Portman Gardens, said: “I’ve lived here for 29 years but now I’m considering moving over this.

“Drivers come racing and spinning down the road as they look for a parking space and it creates a very dangerous situation.

“They park on both sides of the road and there’s little room for any other cars to pass through, let alone an ambulance or a fire engine.”

Irfan Undre, the manager of the banqueting hall, apologised for the issues.

He said: “Last week we had an African funeral and since we’ve only got capacity for 350 people, some had to wait outside which caused a lot of noise.

“I’ve got a noise monitor to check the music levels are okay and it always tells me they are in the normal limit.

“We’ve got a car park but it’s only got capacity for 50 cars so we try to give our customers alternative, free parking.

“We do ask our staff to clear the area of rubbish after every event, but unfortunately that doesn’t stretch to Greenway Close.”

Mr Undre also offered to hold a meeting with those living in the area to find a solution.

Barnet Borough Council said it has received noise nuisance and licencing somplaints about the hall in the past, and has served it with a noise abatement notice which has improved the music levels from the centre.

It added: "Our noise team will be returning to the site over coming weeks to continue to monitor noise levels at the premises.

“The licensing complaint was investigated but as the premises were not in breach of their licence no further action was taken. A new licensing application was granted in May 2014 with no representations from the public or police.

“We are also aware of parking problems in this area and are currently consulting with ward councillors on this issue. It is a contravention to park adjacent to a dropped kerb. Any breaches of the peace should be dealt with by contacting the police.”
