The leader of Barnet Borough Council has said he will vote in favour of himself during next month’s vote of no confidence into his leadership.

The vote has been brought against Councillor Richard Cornelius by the Labour group, and will take place on November 4 after a full council meeting.

Speaking to the Times Series, Cllr Cornelius said: “I am going to vote in favour of myself. It’s a strange matter. If there weren’t an election, I wonder whether this would be happening.

“The only issue is whether the Conservatives should have had more seats on the committees. We need to make sure this issue never occurs again and we will.”

Speaking about the report, written by independent lawyer Claer Lloyd-Jones, which triggered the vote, he said: “I think the report that was commissioned was very to the point. The council has been very open in publishing it, and the points arriving need to be dealt with.

“The matter will be fully explored.”
