A volunteer was awarded for his work in the community.

Mick Walsh, who lives on the Strawberry Vale Estate, Finchley, won the volunteer of the year award at the Peabody Volunteer Awards, held at City Hall last Wednesday.

Mr Walsh volunteers at the Green Man Community Centre on the estate, where he runs the IT room from Monday to Friday, despite ill health and regular hospital visits.

He was nominated for the award by the Green Man Management Committee for his commitment and skills.

Mr Walsh said: “It is fantastic to receive this recognition for the time I have dedicated to those who live on the estate. I would like to thank the Greenman Management Group and Peabody for welcoming me as part of something so fantastic and acknowledging my hard work.”

Stephen Howlett, chief executive of Peabody, which runs the estate, said: “Mick is an all-rounder. He works well with others both at the Green Man Community Centre and the residents who attend. This is made even more outstanding with his ailing health.

“Mick always puts others needs before his own and we can’t thank him enough for his efforts.”

More than 120 volunteers attended the awards, along with staff from Peabody and partners The Big Lottery Fund and The London Community Foundation.
