The family of a man who was left paralysed on holiday is appealing for help after they were left with a £100,000 medical bill.

Danny Bissessur, a retired jewellery manufacturer from New Barnet, was left without the use of his arms or legs after suffering a serious spinal cord injury while visiting family in Mauritius in December.

The 66-year-old is currently in Barnet Hospital, in Wellhouse Lane, and is waiting to be transferred to a specialist bed in the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore to treat the quadriplegia.

On the first day of his holiday to Mauritius, Mr Bissessur fainted and fractured his spine.

He was taken to hospital and should have had an operation within six hours of the accident, but was left “neglected” for five days without treatment.

Eventually Mr Bissessur's brother had him transferred to a private clinic where he was operated on. At this point, his respiratory system started to fail and he was put on a ventilator.

His sons Vick and Pree eventually managed to bring him home to the UK last month, and have launched a fundraising campaign to cover the £100,000 medical costs from the private clinic and for getting their father back home, as he had no travel insurance.

Son Vick Bissessur, who runs a driving school in Barnet, said he wanted to raise awareness so people made sure they always had travel insurance.

The 34-year-old said: “I wanted to give people the heads up. It’s a terrible situation for anyone to be in, so we don’t want anyone else to be caught out. The money thing is secondary. We weren’t going to ask, but we started to get in a bit of a hole.”

Vick said his father had usually bought travel insurance, but as he is from Mauritius and was visiting family, perhaps felt he would not need it.

He added: “He is a very loving father. His whole life has revolved around providing for his family. As long as we are happy, he will support us.

“He was quite active before, he was always doing stuff. He travelled a lot, and was always on his feet and wanted to keep busy, and now he is stuck in the opposite position. That’s the saddest part of all, and what he feels most down about.”
