New members of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) have been elected.

Just under 11,000 young people from across Barnet voted in the elections, in which 35 candidates aged 11 to 18 put themselves forward.

Tosin Ilemobola, 16, from Mill Hill County High and Maywand Enayatullah, 17, from London Academy have been elected to serve as Members of the Youth Parliament.

Tosin campaigned to improve extra-curricular activities for young people, focusing on sport and fitness, while Maywand campaigned to increase engagement with politics.

Terence Dobson, 13, from Ashmole Academy and Iqra Shazad, 15, from Copthall have been elected to serve as Deputy Members of the Youth Parliament. Both campaigned to improve the public’s perception of young people.

Tosin Ilemobola said: "I am very honoured and privileged to be a new member for the UKYP. This has been by far one of my greatest achievements. I will work hard to improve the quality of extra-curriculum activities available which will give young people a platform to showcase their talents."

Chairman of Barnet Council’s children, education, libraries and safeguarding committee, Councillor Reuben Thompstone, said: “I want to congratulate not only the newly elected members and deputy members of the UKYP but also everyone who took part in this democratic process – you have truly made Barnet proud.

"I look forward to meeting Tosin, Maywand, Terence and Iqra in the near future to discuss how the council can help them meet their goals."
