Union members working for Barnet Council have announced a 48-hour strike in protest at outsourcing next week.

The authority faces a £90m budget gap by 2020, and is looking at outsourcing council services including libraries, children’s centres and street cleaning to save money.

Barnet Unison claims the plans will damage working conditions, and reduce accountability to taxpayers.

Drivers, social workers, school catering staff and other council workers will set up picket lines on Monday at North London Business Park, Mill Hill Depot and East Finchley Library.

Tuesday will see action taken at North London Business Park, Mill Hill Depot and Edgware Library, followed by a rally at St John’s Church Hall, in Friern Barnet Lane, Friern Barnet.

The strike announcement follows two days of industrial action taken earlier this month by Unison members working across the borough.
