A mother proved she is a cut above the rest when she had her locks shaved off for the hospital that cared for her baby son.

Jodie Carins, of Pinewood Drive, Potters Bar, went for the chop to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

Her son, Oliver, now eight months, had an operation to remove a build-up of tissue in his belly button shortly after he was born, but has since made a full recovery.

But after seeing how the hospital helps children with serious illnesses, Jodie decided to do a dramatic charity challenge to help the doctors and nurses.

Hundreds of old friends turned out to The Two Willows pub, in Potters Bar, to watch her have her head shaved on Saturday.

The 23-year-old said: “It was more overwhelming than I thought it would be. My hair is my pride and joy and as I sat down, my nerves kicked in.

“As soon as I heard the razor I realised what I was doing. When it came off everyone who sponsored me said they want a refund because it really suits me. I couldn’t believe it.

“And now I’ve got it off, I worry about the way I look so much less.”

The finance administrator set herself a target of raising £1,000 but has already smashed that target and made £1,350, with more to come.

But this will not be the end of her fundraising efforts, and plans to train for a charity race for the hospital in the coming months.

She added: “I thought Oliver was going to freak out when he saw me. He looked a little confused and he used to love tearing out chunks of my hair and puling it out, but he’s fine now.

“It was so traumatic when Oliver had his operation, but we had it easy in comparison. Some kids were terminally ill and that’s something I couldn’t even begin to imagine, so I felt I had to do this.”
