AN 81-year-old man whose car flipped over in a quiet street has thanked the “good Samaritans” who came to his aid.

Miraculously the driver, who asked to remain anonymous, was not injured after the accident in Longland Drive, Totteridge, at about 1.30pm on Friday, July 17.

He had been travelling down the road when he clipped a parked car, and his car suddenly flipped onto its side.

Passers-by stopped and asked if he was injured, before they helped him get out the passenger side window.

The pensioner said: “Surprisingly the car turned on its side, trapping me in the driver’s seat. The next thing I remember is I was upside down. People came around and asked if I was alright, and if I had any pain.

“They gradually lifted my feet and I came out the passenger side window, which was facing upwards. There were quite a few people. The ambulance came and checked me over for a few minutes. Miraculously I came out unscathed.”

The driver added: “I am particularly obliged to the lady driver of the white car that was following me. This lady, in a blue dress and white cardigan, not only stopped the traffic but also reassured me through the broken glass window of my car. She talked to me until the emergency services arrived and stayed almost half-an-hour afterwards.”

He said he also wanted to thank the police, ambulance and fire crews, who were “very efficient, professional and polite".

The man added: “I appreciate what they have done. I want to thank those people, they are good Samaritans. I am very grateful they helped me out.

“It is so reassuring to know that the people in this country are willing to go out of their way to help others in distress. My sincere thanks once again to everyone who helped.”

James Kaye, of Longland Drive, saw the scene unfold in front of his house.

The 41-year-old said: “I was in the house when it happened. I heard what sounded like a truck putting rubble and glass into a skip. There were lots of people rushing around the car, and helping him. I am glad he was alright.”

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 1.30pm to Longland Drive to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent an ambulance crew to the scene. No one was to taken to hospital."
