GENEROUS schoolchildren have donated food from their harvest festival to a homeless shelter.

Pupils from Dollis Infant School, in Pursley Road, Mill Hill, visited Homeless Action Barnet in Woodhouse Road, North Finchley yesterday (November 24) to make the delivery.

Each year, children collect food during the October festival to give to the charity, which is dropped off by members of the school council.

Year 1 teacher Jack Wingrove, who runs the school council, said: “We are trying to get the children to understand charity, and giving things back to the local community.

“It is good they got to go and see the actual place. We have lots of meetings, and they say we can give things to people who don’t have food or houses or clothes, but seeing it first hand is really important for them.”

The 28-year-old added: “They were all excited to get out of class for a little while. But as we were coming back, they were asking what was going to happen to the food and who was going to have it. They saw people going in when we were there, so we explained.

“They are all pleased they have helped out. As we left, the shelter said they really appreciated it. There are a lot of people in the community needing help, so they were really appreciative of what we had given.”
