Voters who were turned away from polling stations this morning are being urged to return.

People hoping to vote in North Finchley’s Trinity Church in Nether Street, were of many turning people away after a mix-up with the voting lists.

One woman said: “My friend and her son went to Trinity church in North Finchley at around 7.20am this morning to be told they weren’t registered even though she has voted for years.

“Her husband voted in the post so his has been sent, but her daughter is a politics student in Bristol and she wasn’t able to vote there either.”

Barnet Council has now apologised for the problems and say people who could not vote this morning, can do so now.

Despite the apology, the problems have sparked concerns that all votes may need to be nullified, and people may not be able to vote again later today.

However, one man checking cards at the polling station outside North Finchley library in Ravensdale Avenue, said: “I have been here since before 10am, but we have had no trouble and have not had to send anyone away.

“If anything the turnout has been abysmal so far. Not many young people have turned up yet, maybe after work. But I have been doing this for years, and I have never heard of people being turned away before.”

A Barnet Council spokesman: "All the updated electoral registers are now in place and people can vote as normal.

"We are advising people who were unable to vote this morning to return again be-fore the polling stations close if at all possible. We apologise for the problems we have experienced."
