OVER 100 people pitched in to bring playtime back to the streets for their children.

Residents in Parkhurst Road, Friern Barnet, organised their second Play Street event, closing the road to traffic for the afternoon on Sunday.

Children enjoyed beach games and ice creams while adults had afternoon tea.

Everyone was glad to see the day go ahead without a hitch as an attempt last year was cancelled due to torrential rain.

Parkhurst Road Residents’ Association chairwoman Fiona Quinton said: “It was fantastic to see the children racing up and down the road, playing games, paddling and making sand castles.

“The day was totally organised and funded by residents from the street and we invited local families to come along too.

“It is a great place to live. We have so many lovely people and at least 10 different nationalities in just one street.”

Play Streets are organised throughout the city by London Play and the residents’ association put Sunday’s event together with the help of Barnet Council.

Barry Rawlings, Labour councillor for Coppetts ward, supported the idea when it was put to the council in March and helped get the street closed down for the afternoon.
