PROTESTERS say the council's office move to Colindale will be 'dangerous and costly'.

People from Barnet Alliance for public services, Barnet Trades Council, Barnet UNISON and Barnet Momentum will protest outside Hendon Town Hall tonight (July 26) before a full council meeting.

Campaigner Keith Martin said: “We have a particular interest in this as the question of affordable housing will be raised, as well as the move.

"They say houses in the borough are affordable but the lowest price is about £490,000, and that is far from affordable.

“This decision for new council accommodation will be as dangerous and costly as that to sell off Mill Hill depot when no alternative had been secured.

"The location in Colindale is remote, and the access to it will be as difficult and frustrating as are the Barnet’s call centre and website.”

In a planning committee meeting in March this year, proposals to accommodate 1,200 council staff members with an extra 100 car parking spaces at Grahame Park, Colindale, were accepted.

At the time, Councillor Gill Sargeant for the Colindale ward, called the move a “real mess from beginning to end.”

However, Conservative Cllr Dan Thomas, chairman of the assets, regeneration and growth committee said the amended version delivered a more cost efficient building design.

Cllr Thomas said: “It will benefit the local area and save the taxpayer a significant sum in accommodation costs. A guarantee has been given that the Grahame Park Community Centre will be re-provided as part of the local development.”
