'Robust' plans to tackle swine flu

HEALTH chiefs in Barnet have "robust" plans in place to deal with a Swine Flu pandemic, if it occurs.

The potentially deadly virus has been confirmed in seven countries after the first human cases were identified in Mexico.

The World Health Organisation is warning the virus is spreading around the world and could infect 40 per cent of the British population in the next six months.

Barnet Primary Care Trust medical director Dr Andrew Burnett said the virus was following "a relatively mild course".

However he is urging people who may have visited countries where cases have been identified to monitor their health closely over the next seven days.

He said: "So far, deaths from this have not occurred outside of Mexico and the disease seems to be following a relatively mild course.

"People can be assured Barnet is prepared and has robust plans in place to deal with a flu pandemic, should this occur."

Symptoms to looks out for include a temperature of 38°C or more, a feverish illness accompanied by one or more of cough, sore throat, headache and muscle aches.

If you have visited an affected country and develop any of these symptoms, contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or contact your GP by phone immediately.
