Power crisis: Additional compensation for customers without gas on Christmas Day and Boxing Day

RESTORING gas to homes in East Barnet continued today with engineers from National Grid and Veolia Water trying to identify the cause of large volumes of water still in the gas network.

Engineers drafted in from across the country over the Christmas period have attempted to solve the problem, which has hampered efforts to reconnect gas customers.

Harry Buchanan, National Grid incident controller, said: “We have identified some issues on our networks which have now been resolved and as a result we believe we will now be able to make significant headway in reconnecting customers.

“I would like to apologise to residents for the discomfort caused as a result of the loss of their gas supplies during the last week.

"We would want to assure them that our engineers will work throughout the festive season and late into the night to remove the remaining water from the system and restore supplies. We won’t go home until everyone has been reconnected.”

National Grid has written to residents giving information about compensation for loss of gas supplies which will be provided under the company’s Standards of Service.

There will also be additional payments for those residents without gas on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

For more information call 0845 605 6677 or to speak to staff on the ground 07810 470890 or 07768 953923. Alternatively visit the gas-cut control centre in St Mary's School in Little Grove.

People are being advised that it is not safe to try to turn their own gas supply back on. Are you spending Christmas in East Barnet without gas? How are you coping?

National Grid may written to residents but they haven't put it through our letterbox (nor anyone else in our road). We are still without gas and the only piece of communication we have had from National Grid was the card telling us to turn off our appliances last Sunday. The lack of communication is appalling!

OK, so here we are on day 6, no one called yesterday but 2 men have just appeared. Our pressure is now fine at 19 but they can't reconnect us!? Why? Who knows, they didn't speak English.

We had 20 pressure but still with water in the pipes, have they vacuumed your pipes ?, if not then thats who you are waiting for, if you have been vacuumed, you probably now need another engineer. This is what happened to us, in the end they cut out and replaced some pipes because the water would not go out.

We have just had 2 more engineers round who say it doesn't matter what the first 2 found - so what was the point of them visiting?? - they are going to dig a hole in the pavement. Once that has been done the men with the vacuum will visit. We were told this was the solution to our problem last Tuesday so its only taken them 5 days to do something about it. The vacuum men may or may not get round to us today - so that's another day of our Christmas holidays waiting in for something that may never happen.

We had one engineer visit last Tuesday to make sure we were turned off (we were!) and another on Boxing Day to confirm we were still disconnected! And that's it.......
No-one has attempted to suck out the water, change the meter or regulator, or check the appliances yet.........
We still expect we will not be re-connected till January.
It's the same for everyone in Berkeley Crescent, the street time forgot.
Happy New Year, National Grid ;-)
