THEY are more used to handing out receipts but this morning staff at a small supermarket were handed a giant till receipt in thanks.
Workers at the Co-operative store in Mays Lane, Barnet, raised £2,609 over 11 months for the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID).
A representative from the charity presented staff with the giant till roll this morning in thanks for the money raised.
The cash will go to fund the expansion of RNID’s vital Hear to Help Service which trains volunteers, many of whom have a hearing loss, to provide support to hearing aid users in their local communities.
Fundraising activities at Mays Lane included a Fairtrade tasting event, where staff dressed in traditional costumes, a Harry Potter day, a slumber party and a Barnet’s Got Talent competition.
Store manager Pauline Anthony said: “We’ve had a great time fundraising. It has been a real co-operative effort and we would like to thank all our shoppers in Barnet for digging deep in their pockets and supporting our staff in raising so much for this worthwhile charity.”
In total £3.5 million has been raised by Co-operative stores across the country which has paid for 110,000 hearing checks.
RNID chief executive Jackie Ballard said the money raised was “a fantastic achievement”.
