Shoppers at Waitrose in High Barnet support for local charities

THREE good causes have been given a cash boost thanks to shoppers at a High Barnet supermarket.

Waitrose at the Spires Shopping Centre gives £1,000 every month to local charities nominated by the public. Customers are given a green token every time they shop and decide which charity they want to support.

This month RSPCA Southridge, the Dollis Valley Centre, a community centre which offers advice and companionship, and Ebog football club all received a share of the cash. Since the Waitrose scheme was set up in Augsut 2008 it has raised more than £19,000 for 57 charities.

Michael Hynes, branch manager of Waitrose Barnet said: "We’ve had a terrific response to Community Matters. It has proved to be a fantastic way for our customers to join us in putting something back into the community in which we serve.

“We look forward to seeing lots of nominations coming in for projects we have not yet supported.”

Customers can suggest a good cause by filling in a leaflet at the Welcome Desk.
