A LEADING film critic has backed the restoration of East Finchley's historic cinema, which is poised to begin next week.
The dates for the work on the Phoenix Cinema, in High Road, have been confirmed by contractors and one of the cinema's patrons, broadcaster Mark Kermode, has declared his delight as the £1.1 million project moves forward.
Speaking after cinema bosses announced the renovation will officially begin next Monday, Mr Kermode said: “I've been coming to The Phoenix, or The Rex as it was then, since I was a boy; I love the cinema.
“The Phoenix was the place where I spent every Friday and Saturday night watching all these great double-bills so it contains some very happy memories for me personally. I'm delighted that it is now being restored to its former glory “The new Phoenix will be a landmark building with excellent facilities that everyone can be proud of.”
The Centenary Restoration Project, which will enhance the cinema and create a new cafe-bar in the building, has been planned for two and a half years, during which time more than £1 million has been raised.
The work coincides with the 100 year anniversary celebrations of the Grade II listed site, which is the oldest purpose-built cinema in constant operation in the country.
Bosses said they have been “overwhelmed” with the level of support and generosity shown by people supporting the project. The Heritage Lottery Fund contributed £607,000 while other Trusts and Foundations put forward large sums of money and more than 500 people made donations ranging from £5 to £25,000.
Paul Homer, Chief Executive of The Phoenix Cinema Trust said “I’m excited and delighted to finally be starting the building work.
“This project has had a long genesis and it’s great to be delivering what we promised we would to our audiences and local community. When complete the cinema will finally be able to offer its loyal customers the facilities and surroundings they deserve.”
The Phoenix has appointed experienced restoration builders Durkan Ltd to carry out the works, which are scheduled to be completed by August 30.
The building works will be in two phases. During phase one, from March 22 to June 6, the cinema will remain open to the public for evening and weekend performances while the builders mainly concentrate on outside works.
From June 7 until late August phase two will see the auditorium restored with its Edwardian and Art-Deco features conserved and enhanced, as well as the café-bar created at the front over the building.
Fundraising efforts continue for the remaining £65,000. Donations can be made at www.justgiving..com/phoenix-cinema
