THE man killed in a hit-and-run crash in Golders Green early on Friday morning was a German student from west London, it has been confirmed.
Barnet Coroners Court named the 23-year-old victim as Janek Alexander Pearce, who was living in Orme Square, Bayswater.
He had been crossing the A406 North Circular Road, at the junction with Golders Green Road, with a friend at about 12.45am when he was hit by a car.
An inquest was opened and adjourned today while police continue their investigations.
The court, in Wood Street, heard that despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mr Pearce “died almost instantly” at the scene.
A post mortem, held at Finchley Mortuary on Sunday, gave the cause of death as “multiple injuries”.
Mr Pearce is believed to have come over from Germany and was living in London with his family, who have been informed of his death. He was due to go into his third year studying at university.
Officers from the Road Death Investigation Unit, at Alperton, are waiting to question his friend, who sustained broken bones in the crash and remains in a stable condition in hospital.
Police said the driver of the car failed to stop at the scene, but contacted officers soon after and he was arrested.
The 21-year-old has been bailed to return to a northwest London police station on a date in early November, pending further enquiries.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information on the incident is asked to call police on 020 8998 5319.
