COUNCILLOR Lynne Hillan has held on to her position as leader of Barnet Council.

The Brunswick Park ward councillor received the majority of votes from Conservative colleagues to secure the leadership after a strong challenge from Councillor Mark Shooter.

The result was announced this evening during the group's AGM, held at Hendon Town Hall, in The Burroughs.

Cllr Hillan has been widely criticised for her plans to award cabinet members huge increases in their allowances, a move which sparked the leadership battle. She has since announced the decision will be reversed and allowances will remain at the original level.

Tory party members met in the main council chamber to decide on the leadership after the challenge was brought by Hendon ward councillor, Mr Shooter.

He had sent letters to colleagues on August 12 asking for their support in running for the leadership and promised “a fresh start” for the party.

He claimed the administration “could no longer be trusted to make important judgements” and claimed they were “totally out of touch with public opinion”.

The victory means Cllr Hillan will continue in the position she has held since December, however there remains a deep feeling of unrest within the party.

She still faces a vote of no confidence at next weeks meeting of full council after a motion was put forward by the leader of the Barnet Liberal Democrat group, Councillor Jack Cohen.

Councillor Wendy Prentice held on to her position as chairman of the party, beating Councillor Brian Sharma by just one vote, winning by 19 votes to 18.

Well done, Tory councillors, having learnt nothing from the past few weeks of uproar over the Allowancegate disgrace: instead of trying to reclaim some support from the electors of this borough you have effectively told them that you stand by everything that happened, the rise, your own cowardly support for the vote, the treatment of Mrs Salinger, the U turn. Your political instincts are stunningly inept.

When Michael Heseltine challenged Margaret Thatcher for the party leadership in 1990, Thatcher won the first round, but her margin of victory was so small that two days after the ballot she was forced to resign because it became clear to her that she did not have the confidence of her MPs to continue. But Heseltine was not some new kid on the block. He had been a senior member of her Cabinet for many years. Let nobody be in any doubt that for Hillan to win by just one vote against the new kid on the block is nothing less than a catastrophic and humiliating verdict on her and her discredited policies.

"When!" maybe too late. There's only one way the Town Hall will respect the benevolence of the majority. Anybody remember the people's "support" for the poll tax 20 years ago

I went to a poll tax protest outside the Town Hall, actually GP, many years ago, which I remember vividly as I got carted to hospital shortly afterwards with peritonitis! But the anger which people felt then is similar to that felt, albeit on a local scale, in relation to the Alowancegate disgrace, I would say ...

It should be remembered by all concerned residents that while ordinary workers in the borough struggle on frozen salaries or worse, face the loss of their jobs, 8 Barnet councillors who are committee chairmen and women will apparently still be getting rises of 54%, yes 54%, for their posts. Why? You tell me. Or tell your Tory councillors what you think about it.
