Two teenagers sentenced after violent robbery in East Finchley

Jamie Carney, 18. Jamie Carney, 18.

Two teenagers from Muswell Hill have been sentenced after viciously robbing a man in East Finchley.

The 21-year-old victim was walking home after spending an evening with friends in Muswell Hill last May, when he was pounced on by Jamie Carney, 18, of Barrenger Road and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The teenagers ran up behind the victim in Durham Road, East Finchley, grabbed him by the neck and pulled him to the ground before repeatedly kicking him in the face and head.

They took his iPhone, watch and iPod and continued their attack, forcefully kicking him in the face, head and upper body until he was bleeding and unconscious.

The pair then made off towards Fortis Green Road, East Finchley.

When the victim eventually came to, he staggered along Durham Road leaving behind a trail of blood, and knocked on the door of a house where police and an ambulance were called. He had substantial bruising to his head and face and his left eye socket had multiple fractures.

As officers examined the scene of the attack, they spotted Carney and two youths.

On being searched, police found Carney was in possession of the iPod and watch and one of the youths was in possession of the iPhone.

Carney was convicted of robbery after a trial at Wood Green Court in January. On Friday, February 10, he was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court to three years in a youth offender institution. The 17-year-old youth, who had earlier pleaded guilty to robbery, was sentenced to an 18-month detention training order.

DC Aileen Davies, the officer in charge of the investigation, said. “It is only sheer luck that the victim, who was left for dead in the street by his attackers, was not much more seriously injured. The level of unprovoked aggression shown by these young men to a complete stranger, who was a visitor to this country, is shocking and the sentences handed down are well deserved.”

A third youth was acquitted of all charges at the trial.
