Man given 27 year sentence for attempted murder
A man who stabbed his wife’s ex-husband has been given a 27 year sentence for attempted murder.
Following an eight day trial at Wood Green Crown Court William Kelly, 50, was found guilty, on Wednesday, of the attack on Michael May which took place on October 30, 2011.
He was sentenced this afternoon to 13 and a half years in custody and another 13 and a half years on license in the community.
The defense pointed out a number of mitigating circumstances including that Kelly had lost his first wife to complications after an operation, that he had suffered serious leg injuries in a motorbike crash and that he had spent time homeless.
However, the judge said: “That Mr May survived is a considerable miracle. His life was quite simply ebbing away.
“This was a case of level one attempted murder with serious long term harm.
“The clear objective was to end Mr May’s life.”
Kelly, who lives in east London, entered a house in Oakleigh Road North, East Barnet, at 3.30am while his victim, Mr May, was sleeping.
Kelly entered the house using a key which he had obtained from Mr May’s young son, his face was covered with a balaclava and a motorbike helmet and he was wearing gloves and a boiler suit.
He struck Mr May over the head, and then on the arms, with a baton causing serious bleeding.
He then forced his victim to the ground and pressed the baton to his neck before drawing a knife from a shoulder sheath and stabbing Mr May twice through the heart and four times in his arm.
The victim struggled with his attacker and managed to knock the knife out of his hand.
Kelly searched for the knife and when he found it he ran from the scene saying: “Don’t look at me. Don’t follow me or I’ll kill yer kids.”
Kelly left Mr May badly injured but he managed to drag himself to a phone and called 999.
When police and paramedics arrived they had to force the door open to treat him.
Mr May was rushed to hospital where it was discovered that of his numerous stab wounds, two had pierced his heart.
The victim had previously been married to a woman with whom he had two children.
Following their divorce the victim’s ex-wife married Kelly.
He is said to be devoted to his new wife.
The victim had recently obtained custody of the two children, who were living with him, but staying with their mother, on the night of the attack.
The judge gave this custody decision, as well as Kelly’s belief that Mr May had raped his wife during her marriage to the victim, as the motive for the attack.
Mr May said that the divorce, and subsequent relationship with his ex-wife and her new husband, had been acrimonious.
Kelly was identified as police discovered he was the owner of a Nissan car which was seen on CCTV near the scene shortly after the attack and which contained Mr May’s blood.
At the scene the police also found the tip of a black rubber glove which had traces of Kelly’s DNA on it.
After the sentencing the judge thanked the police and paramedics who he said had saved Mr May’s life.
Officer in the case Detective Constable Matthew Bennett said: “Kelly carried out a wicked and terrifying attack in the victim’s own home.
"This attack was so ferocious that Mr May was lucky to survive and tribute has to be paid to the medical services that came to his aid.
“Kelly had attempted to conceal both his motive and identity; but the evidence gathered by police enabled the jury to see through his deceptions and bring him justice.”

u are unhappy about this story??i dont surpose mr may is very happy about whats happened to him and those poor children..are you some sort of muppet?Justice has been served,just not well enough in my opinion.i hope kelly gets what he deserves and "I would appreciate that no more lies are spread via your mouth".

And by using the son's key what would happen if he had killed May , would he have left the body for the son to find ?
The courts had awarded May his childrens custody & Kelly in his actions gave no thought to how these children would cope with being left fatherless
27 years should have been life !!!

I am unhappy about this story. It is total fabrication and there is no truth in the part of there being CCTV in the Barnet area of this vehicle. The only CCTV that was available is in the Hackney Area at the time of the assault. I would like Emma Phippen to make sure of facts before she ruines peoples lives with lies. This is absolute deffimation of caractor. I would appreciate that no more lies are spread via your paper.
wonder why she goes on about the CCTV & not everything else ? Also something can be said for the fact that the attack happened when the children were at kelly's home, so there would be no witnesses ,did kelly plan this alone injustice 2012 ?
At the end of the day 2 children almost lost their father & have undoubtedly suffered already as their father recovered from his horrific wounds

Right!!!! 1. Mr Kelley has fingers missing on both hands which leaves him with 3 fingers on each hand not 4. ( prints show four. 2.Mr Kelly is blind as a bat without glasses n has never worn contact lenses (before any1 jumps on that) n the attacker was said to have not been wearing glasses. 3. Mr Kelly is right handed not left handed. 4. Also stab wounds where shown to be struck in an up wards direction not straight or down wards. So if your attacking someone and they are on the ground and attacker is on top of you, the stab wounds would be positioned in a down wards position!!!!
Mr may would do anything to get Mrs Kelly back in his life and that includes setting Mr kelly up to get him off the scenes. This man has been trying to get back with Mrs kelly for a very long time n has used there children to pass messages on when they where visiting there mother stating "Dad said to tell you leave william so you can go back to him, so we can live as a family again" (Not on your nelly mate)
So is that a sick twisted man or what. I believe that this so called victim is so sick in the head that he would do anything to distroy the Kelly family and that includes stabbing him self because he knows she will never go back there no matter WHAT!
So if he cant have her nobody can YEAH!!!!!

Barnet council doesn't pay for the CCTV number plate recognition cameras in its borough, but the border of the borough is just 0.9 miles away from where the attack took place, and that is where the CCTV came from. So how many three fingered men were there within a 0.9 mile radius at 4 in the morning, and why is Kelly's car full of the victim's blood?
Apparently this guy didn't die so surely the real victims here are his two kids so why don't you spare a thought for them, instead of lying and trying to defend the undefensible?
And courts don't generally take children away from one parent unless there is a **** good reason to. Sounds like justice to me.

Goon says the evidence shows four fingerprints. It did not. It shows three. She also knows Kelly was specifically asked in court to hold his hands up and show he only has three fingers, and she also knows that he tried to hide the fact by wearing long clothes, hiding his hands and refusing initially to hold them up when asked to.

but at the end of the day kelly did not have the right to take another man's life & act in a cowardly manner, he did not have any thoughts for those children & what they would have suffered if their father had sadly passed away

Anyone with a bit of common sense can see that the courts awarded custody of your children to the person who would put their welfare & wellbeing before themselves that is why they were given to their father..
was Mr May attacked because of this ? that if he was not alive to care for his children you would have them returned to your " care " sounds as though kelly should not be the only one serving time for this horrific crime !!!
