Headteacher pays tribute to suicide teen

The headteacher of a Finchley student who is believed to have taken her own life last week has paid tribute to "a kind, compassionate girl".

Lucy Irvine, 16, was found dead at her home in Bycullah Road, Enfield, on Saturday night after she hanged herself.

Lucy attended The Compton School, in Summers Lane, Finchley, and today her former headteacher, Teresa Tunnadine, said that both staff and students were "deeply shocked and saddened by Lucy's tragic death".

"Lucy was a quiet, reserved girl with a very close and supportive circle of friends," she said.

"She was a kind, compassionate girl who always looked out for her friends.

"Lucy will be greatly missed and remembered with love by all who knew her well."

Described by her headteacher as "passionate about animals and devoted to her pets", Lucy had hoped to explore a career working with animals and take up a place at Capel Manor College in Enfield to study animal care.

Students in her year have suggested a number of ways to mark her life. The school is opening a book of commemoration for students and staff to sign and a tree will be planted in her memory in the school grounds.

Students will also lead a memorial service in Lucy's honour.

An inquest into the girl's death has been opened and adjourned at Hornsey Coroner's Court.

Although i hadn't spoken to Lucy properly since i left compton i have many fond childhood memories with her; Primary school, Friary Park, Brownies and so on, and i'm glad that in nearly all of these memories, she has a smile on her face. I was deeply sadenned to hear of the death of such a beautiful, caring, loving and bright person. Rest in peace Lucy.

i was a student at the compton school last year, i did not know lucy irvine but she seems like such a lovely person, i wish i knew her. it upsetting knowing that she was so upset that she felt that was her only option and know one took the time to change things for her, its such a shame that she ended her life so soon without living it, she was so young. i only wish someone knew how she was feeling...
    R.I.P Lucy. x

I was also a student last year at the Compton. I did not know Lucy either but I always saw her around school. She seemed a pretty quiet girl and looked as though she couldn't hurt a fly. It's just devastating that she took her own life when she hadn't even lived it yet. My thoughts and prayers go to her family right now who must be going through unimaginable grief. Wherever you are now Lucy I hope your happy and free of any unhappiness you experienced while you were here. Rest In Peace xxx

If tears could build a stairway and a memories lane, i'd walk right up the Heaven and bring Lucy back home again where she belongs(with her family and friends). R.I.P Lucy, im gona miss ya lds, but my memories with you and our friends together are still gonna be with me forever, and i will remember the best laughs and fun we had together in Thorpe Park and Isle Of Wight. Lucy was in my school. When the teachers announced her death to us in assembilies everyone was shocked and sadended. Most of us didn't know her but everyone was upset all the same. I can't believe that people in year 11 could be so horrible enough for her to want to take her own life, it's wrong. All my thoughts and sympathy are with Lucy's family and I just hope she Rests In Piece!! Heaven's just gained another angel!
